Description

The Tarot Badge was conceived during DefCon 29 as a natural extension to the Tree of Life Badge. The idea is that the badge contains numerous Tarot decks on board (the ones we are able to distribute without violating copyrights) and is open so that you can add your own decks. Instructions are available for you to convert any 78-card deck to the format required to be displayed and used within the badge firmware. If you want to use decks of different lengths, well, pressure Kevin into supporting that somehow.

We continued down the path of backlit LED display, this time shining through a wheel divided into 24 segments (12 outer, 12 inner). With a 3D-printed or laser-cut separator wheel, fantastic animations can be shown, as each segment can light independently.

We chose a far bigger display this year, the 2.2″ ILI9341 TFT with 240×320 resolution and an SD card slot on the back. We mounted it flush with the surface this year rather than on the top/front board externally. Combining that with capacitive touch sensors, the end product is elegant and smooth.

Fun additions this year, in addition to games and challenges, are the DC540 “Shitty Deck,” which was drawn during drinking sessions at member homes and bars, and the “Bad Advice” flash cards, which add a very specific Northern Virginia flavor to the badge.

Does not include 3D-printed separator wheel, but we provide the files to create them yourself, either by 3D Print (stl) or laser cutter (svg).

NOTE 2022-09-15: If you buy from existing stock, order will ship immediately. If the system says it’s backordered, the next batch will be assembled and shipped around October 1. We’re leaving the ability to backorder open for now, but if it looks like we’re getting overwhelmed we’ll pause backordering. We don’t want to get ahead of incoming parts.
